Bring Your Kids to Work Day
By Jared Matthew Kessler

"Bring Your Kids to Work Day" is something of a magical experience if you are living your "calling" (what you feel you are here to do on the planet). However, this could also be one of the scariest things you can do for a kid if you don't enjoy your work.

I have had the utmost joy in meeting a few people who are truly living their "calling," and what an inspiring thing for anyone to see (especially kids). Yet I also understand the impact of being a kid and seeing miserable people not living their "calling" (which kids hopefully use this as motivation in seeing what they do not want to do).

Although you might not believe it, I've been a part of this "Bring Your Kids to Work Day" a handful of times, and (believe it or not) my soul was crying louder "to get out" than I actually was. Why? Because it was in a place that is more about politics than great work, doesn't listen to positive feedback in helping their organization to grow, is full of scared employees working a job because they feel the "have to pay the bills," is in a small enclosed uninspired environment full of negativity and distrust... and the list goes on and on.

Now the question we have to ask is "Do I truly want my kids around this?" Of course, the "happy mask" is put on for most of the day their kids are there seeing them work... because... well I'm not sure (maybe some adults don't want their kids to see the real truth behind this type of work environment for fear of their kids saying, "Mommy... daddy... why do you work at a place like that")?

Perhaps instead of calling it "Bring Your Kids to Work Day" we might be able to call it, "Bring Your Kids to Your Calling Day?" But then again, how many people around the country could honestly do this? Not many, huh. Want to change that? So do I.
